Frequently Asked  Questions

How does Dr. Shumaker stay current with new techniques and technologies?

As one of the best dentists in America, Dr. Shumaker knows that dentistry is constantly changing. He attends a variety of advanced training courses to stay up-to-date with technology and techniques. This includes learning ongoing innovations in pain control, from topical gels to needle-free sedation, or "sleeping dentistry".

He also belongs to several organizations that offer seminars and conferences on developments in dentistry. Just as important, Dr. Shumaker encourages his staff to pursue continuing education and participate in dental organizations.

What are smile analysis and smile design?

During a smile analysis, Dr. Shumaker and the team listen closely to what you want to accomplish and any concerns you may have. We then look at all the factors that compose your smile. These include the shape and size, the smile line and the position of your teeth, lips and gums when you smile. Once we have collected and analyzed this information, we create a custom smile design.

Dr. Shumaker will use photography and models of your teeth to generate an image of your new smile. He will review the image with you and, with your approval, discuss the steps needed to make it a reality.

How are images taken of my teeth?

We can take digital pictures of your teeth quickly and easily, from all angles inside your mouth, with a pen-shaped device called an "intra-oral camera." We use these images and smile design mock-ups to give you an "after" picture, showing how a particular treatment or procedure would improve the appearance of your smile. Want to see how it works? We would be more than happy to demonstrate.

How can I safely whiten my teeth?

Whitening is very popular and there are several methods available. Many of our patients are concerned about which is best for their teeth. Because each mouth is unique, we need to evaluate your teeth before we recommend a specific treatment. If your teeth are cracked, chipped or very discolored, Dr. Shumaker may recommend restorative services, such as veneers or bonding. If you choose to bleach your teeth, we offer BriteSmile in our office and, for at-home, tray bleaching and professional white strips.

I want my front teeth to look better, but I do not want to wear braces. What would you recommend?

There are a variety of solutions that don't require braces. We offer several cosmetic services to straighten your teeth. If you would like to learn more about your options, call to schedule an appointment with Dr. Shumaker. After learning your goals and concerns, he can suggest ways to help you straighten your teeth without braces.

My gums bleed after I brush. Is this something to be concerned about?

Yes. Bleeding gums can be caused by a variety of things, from a leaky filling to gum disease. While it may seem harmless, bleeding gums can lead to a variety of serious health problems. If your gums are bleeding, call us as soon as possible to schedule an appointment so we can analyze-and treat-the cause.

Do you accept my insurance plan?

We know that insurance benefits plans can be confusing. We will submit your bill to any insurance company you name. However, patients are responsible to pay any amount not covered by their insurance.

That said, we believe that your insurance coverage should never dictate the quality or timing of your treatment. If you are planning for extensive or long-term dental care, you might consider the financing assistance we offer through Care Credit. We are happy to answer any questions you may have about payment options. The more you know, the better you'll feel.

How can I ask Dr. Shumaker questions directly?

Dr. Shumaker is a very friendly person and welcomes any of your questions during your visit. If you have questions before your visit, you may call our office or email Dr. Shumaker questions directly at drshumaker@drshumaker.com.

What is your favorite method of advertising?

Word of mouth. (Haha! Get it?)

In all seriousness, referrals from happy patients are vital to the ongoing success of our business. Perhaps you were referred to Dr. Shumaker by someone you know. Pay it forward! If you had a positive experience at our office, please tell your family, friends, colleagues and neighbors.
